Overview
Pinterest Image Downloader is a Chrome extension for downloading images, GIFs, and videos from Pinterest. We built it with privacy in mind.
Your Privacy
We built this extension with privacy in mind and keep data collection to a minimum. The extension:
- Does not require an account or login
- Does not collect your name, email, or any personal information
- Sets no cookies of its own and never uses cookies to identify or track you
- Never sees or stores the images you download, the pins you open, or the pages you browse
How the Extension Works
The extension runs entirely in your browser:
- When you paste a Pinterest URL, the extension fetches the pin page directly from Pinterest to extract the media URL
- Those requests are anonymous and carry no Pinterest cookies. If Pinterest hides a pin that is still live, one last attempt is made from your own Pinterest session so you get the file instead of a "pin unavailable" message — nothing from that request reaches our servers
- When you hover over a pin, the extension reads the image source from the page
- Downloads are saved to your device through Chrome's built-in download manager
- Apart from the anonymous usage analytics described below, no browsing data or downloaded content passes through our servers
Incognito Windows
By default the extension does not run in Incognito windows — Chrome keeps extensions disabled there unless you explicitly turn on "Allow in Incognito" for the extension on the chrome://extensions page. If you enable it, the extension behaves exactly as it does in a normal window and collects nothing extra:
- The anonymous installation identifier used for the usage analytics described below, the review-prompt counters, and any media temporarily buffered during a board download are kept in the extension's regular storage — they are shared with normal windows and do not vanish when the incognito window closes
- Files you download are saved to your device through Chrome's built-in download manager, like any other download
Review-Prompt Counters
To decide when to show an in-extension prompt asking whether you'd like to leave a review on the Chrome Web Store, the extension keeps a small set of counters in your browser's local storage:
- The number of successful downloads (overall, and split by which flow you used)
- The date you installed the extension
- Whether you've already rated the extension or asked us not to show the prompt
These counters are stored using Chrome's chrome.storage.local API, are scoped to your browser profile, and are removed automatically when you uninstall the extension. The raw counters are not shared with Pinterest. A few anonymized summary values derived from them — an approximate installation age and a total download count — are included in the anonymous usage analytics described below, associated only with a random installation identifier.
Anonymous Usage Analytics
To operate, troubleshoot, measure, and improve the extension, we collect limited usage, performance, reliability, and interaction data, together with basic technical information such as the extension version, operating system, and browser version. Events are associated with a randomly generated installation identifier rather than an account or your identity. Individual events are stored and are aggregated in our reports. We do not transmit pin IDs, board names, titles, descriptions, the images or videos you view, the files you download, or full browsing URLs through product analytics. The data is received by our own first-party endpoint on Cloudflare and processed by PostHog, a privacy-focused analytics provider hosted in the EU, and is retained only for as long as needed for these purposes.
Our use of data complies with the Chrome Web Store Limited Use policy: the data described here is used only to provide and improve the extension's single purpose. We do not sell or transfer it to third parties except our processors above, do not use it for advertising, and do not use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending. We do not collect or transmit personally identifiable information.
Website Analytics
This website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which:
- Does not use cookies
- Does not collect personal information
- Does not track users across sites
- Collects only aggregate page view data
Permissions
The extension requests these Chrome permissions:
activeTab— declared for potential future use; it is not currently used. The download overlay is injected automatically on Pinterest pages via the extension's page-matching rules and thescriptingpermission belowdownloads— to save files to your devicedownloads.ui— to manage the download notification so it doesn't block the extension popupalarms— to schedule a safety timer that restores Chrome's download notification even if the extension's background process is stopped while a save prompt is openscripting— to inject the download overlay onto Pinterest pages when the extension is installed or updatedoffscreen— to process video downloads in the background so they can be saved to your devicestorage— to keep the local-only download counters and rating-prompt state described above-
host_permissionsfor the following sites:- pinterest.com — to read pin pages and extract media URLs
- pinimg.com — Pinterest's image and video CDN, for direct media downloads
- pin.it — Pinterest's short-URL service, used to resolve share links into pin URLs
- pin-image-downloader.com (including subdomains) — this site, used for our own services, including anonymous usage analytics. The welcome and uninstall pages are opened as plain browser navigations and do not themselves require this permission.
The hover-overlay button additionally runs on regional Pinterest sites (pinterest.co.uk, pinterest.de, pinterest.fr, etc.) via the manifest's
content_scripts.matchesfield — but the extension never fetches from these regional hosts; URLs are normalized towww.pinterest.combefore any network request.
Third-Party Services
The extension connects to four sites:
- pinterest.com — to read pin pages
- pinimg.com — Pinterest's image and video CDN, for direct media downloads
- pin.it — Pinterest's short-URL service, used to resolve share links
- pin-image-downloader.com — this site, used for our own services, including anonymous usage analytics. The welcome and uninstall pages are plain browser navigations
These are the only host families the extension connects to directly; analytics events received at our first-party endpoint are processed by Cloudflare and PostHog EU as described above. The hover-overlay button also runs on regional Pinterest sites (pinterest.co.uk, pinterest.de, etc.), but the extension never fetches from those hosts — URLs are normalized to pinterest.com before any network request.
User Responsibility
You are responsible for how you use any content you download. Make sure your use complies with copyright laws and Pinterest's terms of service. We take no responsibility for misuse of the extension or downloaded content.
Children's Privacy
Our extension and website are not directed at anyone under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can take action.
Data Retention
We retain limited, anonymous analytics events associated with a random installation identifier, not your identity. Because they aren't linked to you, there's no personal data to access or delete; uninstalling the extension stops ongoing data collection (a single anonymous uninstall event is sent as you remove it).
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with a revised "Last Updated" date.
